Shabbat and Holidays

Shabbat Holidays.Shabbat

Hillel offers dynamic, student-led Reform and Conservative Shabbat services at 6:00 PM each Friday evening during the semester in the Kay Spiritual Life Center.  Our community then comes together for a delicious kosher Shabbat dinner in the McDowell Formal Lounge at approximately 7:15 PM (no charge to students).

Our Shabbat celebrations often involve unique themes and special programs.  We have had speakers and discussions on food ethics, Jewish involvement in American politics, the evolving roles of women in Jewish life and many other topics.  We also regularly welcome visiting groups from other Hillels and synagogues around the country.

Shabbat Holidays.Holidays

AU students celebrate Jewish holidays on campus in both traditional and creative ways.

Hillel hosts on-campus High Holiday services, Passover seders, Chanukah candle lighting events and much more!  We also work with students to develop their own, less conventional ways of celebrating the holidays.  In recent years, for example, AU Hillel and the Jewish Student Association have instituted a special Simchat Torah program on the main Quad that has drawn national recognition.
