The Hill Havurah is a warm, welcoming, independent Jewish community serving the DC area, with a focus on Capitol Hill.  We serve our community with regular religious services, a part-time pre-school (Gan Shalom), a weekly Sunday school (Yavneh), adult and youth educational programs, and other activities. And we operate nearly all of our programs and administration within the prestigious East Capitol Street building of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 2 blocks from the US Capitol. The Havurah is seeking a Director of Operations to administer and coordinate the Havurah’s activities and programs, track our finances and membership, support the work of our Rabbi, and oversee the work of our part-time operations assistant.  Roughly half of the Director’s time is devoted to the administration and coordination of Hill Havurah, and the other half to our educational programs, and particularly the Gan Shalom pre-school.  

This is a dynamic, full-time position requiring flexibility, including working on some weekends and holidays to meet the demands of the Jewish calendar and other events. Anticipated salary range will be $50,000-$60,000, depending on experience, plus benefits, which include a stipend toward health insurance, three weeks’ vacation and most federal holidays.

Overall Responsibilities 

Support Havurah Board of Directors and committees, including working with the Treasurer to develop and manage annual budgets, track membership, and manage daily income and expenses. Manage facility and other contracts, oversee space licenses, and handle insurance. Manage major events, including High Holidays and other major Jewish holidays.Manage IT and other necessary data and management systems.Manage payroll, reimbursements, bank accounts, credit cards, bookkeeping and accounts payable in collaboration with outside accountant.Manage part-time employees.Coordinate set-up, acquisition of supplies, and catering for major congregation events.Work with Board members to publish weekly online newsletter and manage website.  

Educational-programming focused ResponsibilitiesOversee student enrollment and record-keeping on students, staff, and parents.Oversee acquisition of equipment and supplies for educational programs.Manage preschool licensing requirements with DC oversight agency.Assist educational staff in staff and student recruitment Support Gan Shalom Executive Committee, including working with Treasurer to develop and manage annual budget.  

Required Qualifications and ExperienceExcellent oral and written communications skills.College degree required.  1-2 years of management experience.Operations experience, preferably in a not-for-profit environment (religious organization preferred).Self-starter; ability to work effectively with limited oversight. Detail oriented.Experience with event planning and administration. Knowledge of Jewish traditions: life cycle events, Shabbat, calendar and holidays; basic Hebrew terms, religious practices.Comfortable with technology including basic website maintenance, Microsoft Windows technical knowledge, MS-Office, Google Suite, QuickBooks.Collaborative approach to problem solving.Valid drivers’ license in good record.
